Start your request for a CentralNotice banner campaign here!

The aims of this process are as follows:

  • To improve community access to central notice through a clear and transparent process.
  • To improve best practice and ensure greater consistency in campaign implementation.
  • To improve communication around campaigns. Creating clear forums for feedback on campaigns, providing metrics back to campaigns and also a clear method for assessing community consensus for campaigns relating to advocacy.
  • To reduce potential clashes between campaigns

Requests must be made, at minimum, 10 days in advance of any campaign

Step #1 : Review the usage guidelines for CentralNotice
Step #2 : Create your request
Step #3 : Include it on this page.
Step #4 : Add it to the calendar and check for conflicting campaigns in your period for language/geotargeting. Contact the organizers of the other campaigns to solve them!
Step #5 : Notify target projects and geographic affiliates. Add edit diff links to request.
Step #6 : CN Admin & Community feedback [7 days]
Advocacy/Payments: WMF Legal Review [21 days])
Step #7 : Approval/rejection
Step #8 : CN Admin sets up campaign (recommended to allow for up 3 days)
Step #9 : Campaign enabled

Description - Human Rights on Wikipedia is an annual campaign by Wikimedia Czech Republic. The goal of the Human Rights on Wikipedia is to ensure that everyone has access to neutral and up-to-date information about human rights. This information should be backed by facts and relevant sources. Through this challenge, we highlight the fact that Wikipedia is often the primary place where the public seeks answers to questions broadly related to human rights. During the challenge, we teach Wikipedia users who are interested in the topic how to edit.

Metrics - quantitative: Number of articles and pictures uploaded, number of participants; qualitative: jury will pick the articles that are "articles of the highest quality, particularly beneficial for Wikipedia".

Description - The Africa Wiki Challenge is an online campaign that is aimed at generating African-related content on Wikipedia. The annual contest has been running for four years with each year carrying a specific theme. The competition is aimed at improving the statistics of content about Africa on Wikipedia and its sister projects

This year, the theme is Educate Africa: Nurturing Minds for the 21st Century, is in line with this year’s African Union Day theme and is also a part of the African Union’s Agenda 2063. The African Union, under the Agenda 2063 seeks to create revitalized, high-quality, and unified educational systems that meet the needs of Africa, generate acceptable attitudes, values, knowledge, and skills, and support the continent's participation in the international economy of knowledge. With the Africa Wiki Challenge 2024, our objective is to call attention to and recognize the diverse educational perspectives in Africa, encouraging the sharing of information and expertise through engaging content contributions.

Central Notice admin comments[edit]

  • @Kaffzz: Thank you for your CentralNotice request. Unfortunately, you seem to have missed adding significant information to the request (targeted Wiki projects, languages, countries, anonymous/registered users, etc.). Please complete your request so that we can give better feedback. Some general remarks:
    • Translations: Campaigns can only be displayed in projects and languages where banner and landing page have the respective translations. Your banner is English only so far.
    • Community involvement: For that reason we recommend to reach out early to local communities for their approval to be included into the campaign (see Wikimedia projects for easier access to village pumps). We also recommend ambassadors to local wikis as in other global campaigns.
    • Banners: We CentralNotice administrators cannot use GIFs for creating the banners, we need HTML/CSS/JavaScript versions (including cookie-based close buttons). Besides the fact that they wouldn't be usable in mobile campaigns (and I assume that you also want to target mobile users, as a majority uses these devices). Furthermore, we will not display banners with such wild movement of elements that could be misunderstood as ads. Please reduce the noise in the design.
  • Best, —DerHexer (Talk) 18:21, 9 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Hello @DerHexer, thank you for your response. I appreciate the feedback.
The other part of the information section skipped me. Thank you for the prompt. However, I have filled in all the details now.
Translations: For now, we would prefer the banner to be only in English. We seek to translate it into French as well but for the sake of time, just English is fine.
Community involvement: Well noted, we have started reaching out.
Banners: Well noted, I have switched the design totally to something simpler. Also, it is no longer in GIF form. Kindly let me know if this okay.

Banners - Hello, @DerHexer:! How are you? Here's the information for the Mais Mulheres campaign banner.

The overall design could mirror that of the Mais Povos originários banner, which looked great! There are just a few changes:

Instead of the logo, we'd like to use an image of the wikicontest's prizes, which you can find here. Do you think it's possible? Additionally, the background color should be changed to #B984AA.

Text1: Participe do Concurso de Edição Mais Mulheres em Teoria da História na Wiki, entre os dias 27 de junho e 25 de julho de 2024, e contribua para fechar lacunas de gênero. Font: Open Sans Light, size 24, black.

Text2: Inscreva-se aqui. Font: Open Sans Light, size 29, white. For the box, the color is #E34B81.

Thanks a lot for the help! If you have any doubts, please contact me.

Discussion[edit]

@Bruna Grando (Projeto Mais+) I've created the campaign [1] and the banner [2] (preview [3]). As you can see the requested font size is way too large (and/or it's too much text). The problem gets worse if the banner is displayed on mobile devices. Using an image that doesn't take so much space (e.g. square shaped) would probably help as well. --Johannnes89 (talk) 14:41, 4 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Olá,@Johannnes89:. Thank you for your feedback, but for some reason I can't see the preview. Can you check, please?--Danielly Figueredo (Projeto Mais+) (talk) 09:54, 15 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Discussion[edit]

Central Notice admin comments[edit]

  • @AndreFrank-WMIL and מקף: Please note that campaigns have to requested at least 10 days in advance (see CNR) because of possible issues that can show up. Unfortunately, that's here the case:
    • What is this campaign about? As CentralNotice administrators, we had to give a category to the campaign (Article writing, Photography, Event, Fundraising, etc.). Unfortunately, my Hebrew is a bit odd and without any information beyond Wikimedia Israel campaign "רוצים שהעולם ילמד שהוא עגול? עגלו לטובת הוויקיפדיה העברית!" I cannot assign a useful category.
    • As far as I can conclude from the automated translation of the landing page, you are (also) asking for donations. As per CentralNotice guidelines, any kind of fundraising campaigns have to be forwarded to the Wikimedia Foundation staff 90 days in advance so that agreements can be signed, etc.
    • Campaigns that intend to target wide audiences (i.e., anonymous users in particular) should be announced on the local village pump and usually can only be enabled when there is no objection from the local community as well.
    • Lastly, we cannot make good use of images for CentralNotice banners. Although I could embed it into a banner and make the general background black, it will be a major problem for all devices beyond desktop PCs (mobile views often cover more than 50 % of readers so that you likely don't want me to disable that). Usually, either the banner design is provided in HTML/CSS/JavaScript by the requester or we adapt the standard banner where we can use one logo on the left (maybe another one on the right) and a short text with only a few other changes at max. Best, —DerHexer (Talk) 12:15, 1 March 2024 (UTC) PS: See further my presentation about CentralNotice campaigns here.[reply]
  • Hi, thanks for the detailed explanation. This is the first time I make such a request and what you wrote helps me a lot.
    * So, for me, probably just to postpone the start and end date respectively, I guess the main thing is that it will take about a month in total.
  • This is a WMIL fundraising campaign, suggests the readers who are interested in doing so, to round the purchases amounts on credit to the nearest new shekel round whole number, and to donate the Israeli agoras (= the little rounded amount). If you would like to know more about this donation concept (quite familiar in Israel), here is a more detailed explanation: w:he:עיגול לטובה (machine translation to english)
  • Ok. @Andre, I hope you can take care of this aspect. Perhaps the WMF already knows the WMIL campaign from previous years and will confirm it quickly.
  • Ok, announced on w:he:WP:מזנון#M:CentralNotice/Request/Wikimedia Israel, Igul LeTova 2024
  • Is it possible to implement this banner using two separate almost identical banners, the only difference being that one is optimized for desktop and the other for mobile devices?
Thank you! · מקף Hyphen · 12:54, 1 March 2024 (UTC)[reply]
  • Thanks for the proposed steps. As soon as I have all information, I can set up the campaign without the further delay of 10 days. I can also add two banner variants, one for desktop, the other for mobile. Please keep in mind that only HTML/CSS/JavaScript can be used, no wiki markup (the image could be used but has flaws, as said). I'm pinging JBrungs (WMF) so that she is notified about the campaign and can add her OK when everything is cut and dried from the fundraising end. Best, —DerHexer (Talk) 16:41, 1 March 2024 (UTC)[reply]
    Thank you @DerHexer.
@AndreFrank-WMIL and מקף: I know WMIL has run the Round Up campaign before. Have you been in touch with the WMF office this year? I was in touch with @OphirT - WMIL about the campaign last year. We need to renew agreements before you can run the campaign. If this has already happened, great, but can you drop me an email at jbrungs at wikimedia dot org and let me know the details so I can double check this from my side? Thank you! JBrungs (WMF) (talk) 06:40, 4 March 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Letting everyone know that the agreement is now signed and the banners are good to go from my side. @AndreFrank-WMIL and @DerHexer. JBrungs (WMF) (talk) 05:27, 9 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]
    We'll need new dates then. ;) Best, —DerHexer (Talk) 13:06, 9 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]
@AndreFrank-WMIL and מקף: Will you continue this campaign or can it be marked as closed? Best, —DerHexer (Talk) 14:20, 24 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]
I think the banner is still relevant, will be checked. · מקף Hyphen · 15:10, 24 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Hello everyone! I really appreciate your collaboration and support! Our plan is to kick off the campaign in May, however, the Wikimedia Israel board has requested a revision of the design before the launch. They also suggested starting with two slightly different versions to test their effectiveness. Based on the analysis of which version performs better, we will continue with the most successful one for the rest of the campaign.
Please find the approved files attached here:
Thank you for your understanding and cooperation. AndreFrank-WMIL (talk) 03:27, 28 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]
@DerHexer, @מקף, @JBrungs (WMF) can you help me understand how we can advance from here on? Thanks! AndreFrank-WMIL (talk) 06:16, 7 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]
@AndreFrank-WMIL: Please let us know the exact dates and how you intend to test the two versions. :) Usually, you will need access to wikitech:Analytics for banner display data. We CentralNotice administrators cannot provide that. How did you plan to test the effectiveness? Do you want each of them to take donors to different pages where you will do the test? Furthermore, we cannot build banners from PNG mockups either, we need a pure HTML/CSS/JavaScript version (including close buttons, etc.). Can you provide that, please? Thanks and best, —DerHexer (Talk) 17:05, 9 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Discussion[edit]

@DerHexer:, @Johannnes89: and @Martin Urbanec: Sorry to bother you with this request on such short notice but could you look at it and enable it? We were waiting for responses from other affiliates in the region to find dates when the banner can be enabled. Thank you very much in advance. Best, --Paula (WDU) (talk) 19:24, 10 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]

  • @Paula (WDU): Have you informed WMF about the survey? Please take a look at CentralNotice/Usage guidelines#Surveys in case you need more information. Ping for TAndic (WMF) as well. ;) Best, —DerHexer (Talk) 20:42, 10 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]
@DerHexer:: WMF staff is aware that we're conducting this research. We presented the results of the first phase with the assistance of @MCasoValdes (WMF), @Oscar . (WMF) and representatives of affiliates from the region. The survey does not ask for personal name or user name and is done with LimeSurvey to respect the privacy of the respondents.
I hope that clears up any doubts and I look forward to your comments. Thank you very much for your feedback. Best, Paula (WDU) (talk) 14:04, 11 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Hi @Paula (WDU), as you're on a short timeline and this survey doesn't ask for any personal data or demographics as far as I can tell, I don't think it poses much privacy risk and I think we can run it very close to what it is now.
    My two asks are:
Not needed to proceed but a recommendation:
Many respondents likely won't know what Hubs are; If you have the time to get translations, I would recommend briefly defining the concept in the survey itself, or you may get people clicking random responses to try and figure it out from the survey context (this could also help to educate newer users about Hubs and organizing activities). From my read of the survey (you'll see a line in your data that variously says TEST, that's me!) it seems very aimed towards editors who already know about Hubs. Making fewer questions required (LimeSurvey has a "soft mandatory" option rather than mandatory), having "I'm not sure" or "I don't know" response options across questions, or having a filter question that asks "Before taking this survey, had you heard about Hubs?" could also help with this.
Thanks very much for bearing with my long comments and let me know if you have any questions or if I can help in any way. I'll try to be as quick to respond as I can so I'm not blocking you :) Best, - TAndic (WMF) (talk) 10:20, 13 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Hello @TAndic (WMF), thanks for your comments and questions. Participants have the option to select that they "do not have information to know what the hubs are". We decided not to include a paragraph or sentence clarifying anything about the hubs, because at the moment in which this survey was designed there wasn't a lot of agreement among community members either on what the hubs actually were. Therefore, providing a definition would have meant already influencing some of the conversation in one direction or another. That's the reason why people have different options to select from once they say that they "do not have enough information". There's a methodological reason to avoid providing a definition on what hubs are. Scann (WDU) (talk) 16:50, 13 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]
We will add the contact information details on the first page. Scann (WDU) (talk) 16:50, 13 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Hi @TAndic (WMF), I've already add contact information in the survey as you suggested. Thank you! Best, Paula (WDU) (talk) 17:31, 13 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Thank you @Paula (WDU) and @Scann (WDU) I see the conundrum, thanks for the context!

On the final point (linking to the LimeSurvey privacy policy): I realize I have no idea whether it's possible to have multiple links in a banner now that I went back to old survey banners; if it's not possible, any language change in the banner that helps users know they're about to leave Wikimedia servers and go to a survey not conducted by WMF seems sufficient -- eg. adding a smaller line that says "Take a short survey conducted by Wikimedistas de Uruguay" or something similar. As long as we have something that indicates the above, I give my go-ahead to proceed :)

In the future, we're hoping to ensure all surveys have a privacy statement written by those conducting it (how the data will be treated, retained and reported, who is responsible for it, and whether any personal data is asked or collected passively), and links to the tool's privacy policies. As you've noted, this survey doesn't ask for personal information and your survey links to the reporting page and has a place to contact you, so I think it's okay as-is. - TAndic (WMF) (talk) 10:19, 14 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Hello @TAndic (WMF), if needed, we could clarify what we will do to the data (destroying it after processing it). Our general policy is to only keep opt-in data and then destroy all of it after a few months. Scann (WDU) (talk) 10:24, 14 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]
That would be great if you can add that information to your survey introduction @Scann (WDU)! Thank you.
Does adding "Take a short survey conducted by Wikimedistas de Uruguay" (or any variation you choose) in smaller text seem okay for the banner? If yes, I'd recommend updating the messaging above with translations and I think it should be ready! - TAndic (WMF) (talk) 10:33, 14 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Ok @TAndic (WMF) I've added a short privacy statement on the four languages that just clarifies a bit more about how the data are stored. Tagging @Paula (WDU) so she's aware that this is done. Scann (WDU) (talk) 18:43, 14 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]
@DerHexer: we've already made the changes taking into account what @TAndic (WMF) suggested. Could you please enable the banner? Again, thank you so much for all your help. Best , Paula (WDU) (talk) 18:59, 14 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]
I first need to read through the comments and have to create the campaign and banner. I will try my best to do that today, but you are probably aware that this is a complex request on a (too) short notice. Best, —DerHexer (Talk) 19:04, 14 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]

@DerHexer: thank you so much for enabling this campaign on such short notice. It is much appreciated! Please add Brazil to the list of countries. Once added, everything is approved. Best and gracias, Paula (WDU) (talk) 21:25, 14 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Added and enabled. —DerHexer (Talk) 21:31, 14 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]
    @DerHexer @Paula (WDU)
I am speaking on behalf of the Brazilian affiliate Wiki Movimento Brasil. I was a bit surprised about this banner running in Brazil, without prior notice to our affiliate. I would have then discouraged it.
This banner is about a very specific governance topic, based on a specific engagement initiative that a single affiliate is running. The banner is reaching way too broadly our community without much context and information. We have no time nor interest to reply to questions that are arising about what this campaign means, what a hub is etc. I see no point of contact for this campaign in Portuguese-speaking projects.
No prior systematic engagement was made through other community channels, including Village Pumps, in which more active community members could be reached out to and would be more able to grasp what this campaign is about.
This banner is unnecessary and not useful, and I kindly request it is removed from readers/users in Brazil. Thank you! Joalpe (talk) 12:05, 15 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]
I have removed Brazil until it is clarified. Best, —DerHexer (Talk) 12:08, 15 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Hello @DerHexer, I find important to clarify here that @Paula (WDU) did reach out to the people in charge of community engagement / participation at every affiliate to request their permission to run the banner in their country, and of course they could opt-out if they didn't find it appropriately, etc. In the case of Brasil, we received permission on this, but considering this reaction by @Joalpe I think it's just best to leave Brasil excluded from the banner, and we will do the work of disseminating the survey on community channels. Thank you very much and sorry for the misunderstanding. Scann (WDU) (talk) 14:39, 15 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Makes sense. Just let me know when anything changes. Best, —DerHexer (Talk) 16:21, 15 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Thank you for the clarification, @Scann (WDU). I think there was a miscommunication or misinterpretation in this process. It is the practice on Wikipedia in Portuguese, and I guess it is required on step 5 of the banner request, that volunteers on Wikipedia and other projects are communicated about the banner, which should have happened on the relevant Village Pumps in Portuguese.
Procedures aside I think this consultation is about a very specific governance point, and it is not usual to hold them through banner on Wikipedia in Portuguese. Wiki Movimento Brasil is happy to support WDU in devising a strategy for community engagement that does not depend on massively advertising this, including to people who have no understanding of nor interest in the Wikimedia Movement Strategy or hub-making. Joalpe (talk) 16:34, 15 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Ah, thank you for putting the banner down. And for your understanding. Joalpe (talk) 16:35, 15 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]

The message on the Village Pump of fr: is here: fr:Wikipédia:Le_Bistro/7_mai_2024#Demande_de_bannière. Pyb (talk) 14:29, 7 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Central Notice admin comments[edit]

  • @Pyb, Luc Hervier WMFr, and VIGNERON: I've created the campaign and banner (preview). I'm a little bit confused by the long campaign duration; usually we only approve campaigns for two to four weeks. In the banner text, I can also read about the contest time between 15 August and 27 September—why is it necessary to start the campaign on 1 July? I've reduced the diet to 5 displays every two weeks at max. Please clarify, take a look at everything and ping me for activation. Best, —DerHexer (Talk) 09:48, 9 May 2024 (UTC) PS: Nice to see that you my massmail system was mentioned in one of the PDFs. There is another new tool available now, maybe take a look at this one too.[reply]
@DerHexer: yes, the campaign for the banner is long because the contest is long. We also would like to let people know in advance ; especially as with summer vacation the traffic is a bit lower and also to give the opportunity for people to take pictures in advance (some events that are in the scope of the contest happens only during summer).
Displaying it less often could be a solution, maybe we can also start a bit later (July 15 for instance ?) and ends a bit earlier (20 September) and increase a bit the diet?
Feel free to ask all the questions you need. Cheers, VIGNERON * discut. 10:39, 9 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]
I agree with DerHexer that such a long campaign period is not ideal – especially as the campaign targets both logged in users and readers (who cannot opt out of banners). Running it with a reduced diet might be ok though. Note that per CentralNotice/Usage guidelines#Campaign implementation long campaigns usually require community consensus. Johannnes89 (talk) 11:02, 9 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]
@VIGNERON: I've changed the duration accordingly. Are you okay with the white background? I had to change it because the white background of the logo didn't look good on the general grey background of the banner. Best, —DerHexer (Talk) 16:31, 9 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]
    @DerHexer: perfect, thanks! Cheers, VIGNERON * discut. 13:29, 11 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]

I have notified the community on Ukrainian Wikipedia's Village Pump. Here's our previous banner request for this project in 2023 (banner design can be copy-pasted from there if needed – we changed the text but didn't change the design). --AntonProtsiuk (WMUA) (talk) 12:11, 4 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Banners - Hello, @DerHexer:! How are you? Here's the information for the Mais Diversidade campaign banner.

The overall design could mirror that of the Mais Povos originários banner, which looked great! There are just a few changes:

Instead of the logo, we'd like to use an image of the wikicontest's prizes, which you can find here. Do you think it's possible? Additionally, the background color should be changed to #8153D6.

Text1: Participe do Concurso de Edição Mais Diversidade em Teoria da História na Wiki, entre os dias 11 de outubro e 11 de novembro de 2024, e contribua para visibilizar conhecimentos dissidentes. Font: Open Sans Light, size 24, black.

Text2: Inscreva-se aqui. Font: Open Sans Light, size 29, white. For the box, the color is #5ED5ED.

As you probably noticed, the instructions are pretty similar to the Mais Mulheres' banner, just different background colors, image and text. Maybe using that one as reference when it's done would make the work easier! Again, thanks a lot for the help! If you have any doubts, please contact me.

Discussion[edit]

@DerHexer:, @Martin Urbanec: and @Vermont: Good evening everyone and I'm really sorry to bother you but I want to check if everything is OK with this request since this campaing is about to start. Thank you so much in advance and I remain at your disposal in case there's any questions. Best, --Paula (WDU) (talk) 01:01, 15 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Paula (WDU), nothing's been done on our end yet. Sorry for the delay here, and no worries for pinging us. The settings look okay re: language and region, though we generally can't do a full two months. 4 weeks is the longest we generally do, the usual cap is 2.
I'm also going to hold off on enabling this until we get approval from JBrungs (WMF); according to the calendar there would be some overlap for anonymous editors viewing eswiki in 5 countries. (In the future, please remember to add your banner to the calendar too.)
I've made a campaign and can make a banner when this is good to go, or someone else can, I'm unfortunately very busy.
Best regards, Vermont (🐿️🏳️‍🌈) 02:42, 15 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks for your response, @Vermont. Can you change the scope to something like this? We'd like to be present to everyone using es.wikipedia in every LAC country. We'll be waiting @JBrungs (WMF)'s approval. Thank you both, Paula (WDU) (talk) 03:26, 15 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Hi @Paula (WDU),
Thanks for the ping. Yes, we are running a fundraising campaign until the end of May in CL, CO, MX, PE, UY. This means 75% of non-logged in users will see a fundraising banner first, before they will see your campaign banner. If this is ok with you, I don't see a problem with the campaign as long as CN admins are ok with it. Have a good campaign. Best, JBrungs (WMF) (talk) 04:49, 15 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks, @JBrungs (WMF). We were aware and are OK with it. So @DerHexer, @Martin Urbanec and/or @Vermont, could you kindly enable the campaign and the banner so it can be running as soon as possible? Thank you all very much. Best, Paula (WDU) (talk) 12:30, 15 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Ok, campaign and banner created, not enabled yet.
Paula (WDU), while creating the banner I read over the text and event page, and I have some concerns:
  • The banner text (en: "Contribute to the knowledge we need for a sustainable future") is quite vague. It's unclear what this is a banner for, it could be anything from fundraising to advocacy. But, it's an editing event, and that should be clear for people who click on this.
  • You've requested this be shown to logged-in and anonymous users, and the resources page has some helpful info, but I don't think this is sufficient for the audience. This banner will be shown to people who have never edited before, who may not even know that they can edit. I'd recommend bold, emphasized text on the main event page pointing new contributors to the resources page, and more of a focus on providing support in getting started from the absolute beginning (i.e., registering an account, how to edit, etc.). I also can't find information about contacting the organizers in the event pages.
Best regards, Vermont (🐿️🏳️‍🌈) 20:25, 19 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Hi @Vermont, thank you very much for your suggestions. I'll answer your concerns:
  • The banner text is the one the global campaign has been using. @Astinson (WMF): is there other phrase we could use?
  • I've added a paragraph for beginners in which we invite them to look at the resources page, join the telegram chat (which is included in the event registration tool as well) and to write us by mail in case of doubts.
I wasn't able to look the banner. It gave me an error but, if you agree with it, we can wait for Alex Stinson's opinions regarding the banner's message. Best, Paula (WDU) (talk) 14:00, 22 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Hi @Vermont the tag line has been working pretty well in the contexts where communities are testing it.
One way the action could be clarified would be "Add knowledge for a sustainable future to Wikipedia" or something like that -- where its more of an action language, than a tag line. I think we rely a lot on the landing pages to clarify the action with most central notice campaigns, and I trust Paula and team to do that well, Astinson (WMF) (talk) 12:53, 25 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]
@Vermont: we'd like to use the phrase we proposed earlier to be in sync with the global campaign. I've already made the improvements to the landing page you suggested, could you please enable the banner? Thank you very much in advance. Best regards, Paula (WDU) (talk) 15:30, 30 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Paula (WDU), I've enabled the campaign to run for 4 weeks: 1 May to 29 May. I also added it to the campaigns calendar. Regards, Vermont (🐿️🏳️‍🌈) 23:24, 30 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]

  • Hi RamzyM (WMF). A few things about the campaign/banner settings before I make it:
    • Your request asks this to be run for all logged-in users, but the vast majority of those users are not eligible. We can add some javascript that will limit this to users with more than 300 edits, I'm forgetting whether we can get global edit count or whether we're limited to per-wiki edits. Basically, I'd recommend finding other ways to reach out to people who are not eligible for edit count but may be eligible for the other listed reasons.
    • If you want to run this on Catalan projects (your request indicates all languages), please discuss it with the community and report back whether they have approved. This is indicated in the usage guidelines.
    • How many languages will this banner be translated into before it is running? We like to avoid showing English banners to non-English speakers.
    • Please add your campaign to the CN calendar and requests page. This is steps 3 and 4 of requesting the banner (see the requests page).
Best regards, Vermont (🐿️🏳️‍🌈) 14:04, 18 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Hi Vermont, I've added the campaign to the calendar and requests page.
  • Yes, please add the javascript that will limit the banner to users with more than 300 edits across the Wikimedia projects, if possible.
  • No, please exclude the Catalan projects.
  • We do not budget for a professional translation, since we plan to use a modified version of the U4C charter banner texts (which has been widely translated). We will prioritize calling for volunteer translations into Russian, German, French, Spanish, Portuguese, Chinese, Arabic, Japanese, Bengali, Farsi, Ukrainian, Czech, Polish, Italian, Turkish, Korean, Indonesian, Thai, Hindi, Swahili, Hausa, and Hungarian.
Let me know if you need anything else. Cheers, RamzyM (WMF) (talk) 14:42, 18 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]
@RamzyM (WMF): We can only check the local, not the global count. Still okay? With this number? Best, —DerHexer (Talk) 14:35, 24 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Should be fine, thanks DerHexer. RamzyM (WMF) (talk) 22:24, 24 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Yes, thank you @DerHexer:, --Manfred Werner (WMAT) (talk) 16:15, 24 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Sorry for the little delay of my response. The banners look good and just like we have planned them. I hope the description of the targeting is clear enough in the request above.
Now I have finally understood that you need HTML/CSS/JavaScript, not Wiki markup, in the drafts for banners. Above I have used an existing example I found when searching for a template to prepare it as good as possible; thus the style and the comments in the source text.
For now we are thankful that you found the time to handle this request! That's really appreciated. -Manfred Werner (WMAT) (talk) 16:37, 24 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]
All enabled. —DerHexer (Talk) 16:47, 24 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Hi, this is a bug report. There doesn't seem to be any way to dismiss these banners? Screenshot at imgur. (i.e. no "X" close icon, as far as I can see). I tested in a logged-out window, too. I hope that helps! Quiddity (talk) 17:04, 24 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Hi all,
Sorry I was OOO for a few days and just saw this. This all looks good but I just wanted to make sure you are aware that we are running fundraising campaigns for non logged in users in Austria, Chile, and Uruguay during the time of your campaign. This means that for 75% of the time, logged out users will first see a fundraising banner for 10 impressions before they will see your banner on Wikipedia. Best, JBrungs (WMF) (talk) 06:17, 29 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]
It's difficult to plan such an event months in advance, especially the start and end dates that have to be coordinated, and also to consider (and avoid collisions with) every possible other campaign that may be happening at the same time in 16 countries. We are glad the banner is online - of course it would be nice if also the logged out users in Austria, Chile and Uruguay get it shown from time to time. But neither our nor the fundraisers campaign can change the timeframes now. We will have to see how it turns out in regard of participation and donations.
Again, thank you to all of you who helped with this request! --Manfred Werner (WMAT) (talk) 14:24, 1 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Discussion[edit]

We'd like to continue the campaign from last year (request). The banner will only be running for two days before the first Wednesday of each month, and will be targeted to users with less than 100 edits. Jon Harald Søby (WMNO) (talk) 08:24, 7 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]

@DerHexer you handled this last year right? Do you have time to coordinate again? Ciell (talk) 18:51, 15 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Nope, Jon organized it himself. I hope that he will do it for this year again. ;) And as far as I know, they want to reuse the campaign of last year. —DerHexer (Talk) 19:13, 15 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]
