Community Wishlist Survey 2022/Multimedia and Commons/Improve browsing PDFs and DJVU
Improve browsing PDFs and DJVU
- Problem: Currently PDFs which are uploaded like this one have a very rudimentary paging interface, which is only available on the file description page. The interface does a full page reload and is not very usable on mobile interfaces. Also when transcluded, you can only select 1 page, and from there you cannot reach any other page, you have to click and visit the File description page.
- Proposed solution: I propose enhancing the view with a JS based left/right arrow interface and loading pages on demand and to make the interface mobile compatible.
- Who would benefit: Users trying to interact with our paged media, curators, especially on Mobile
- More comments: To improve performance, we could preload the next and previous pages. Possibly extend this UI to also allow to be opened in the MediaViewer software when the PDF is embedded in a wikipage.
- Phabricator tickets: Slightly related: phab:T54881

Discussion
- This is a nice wish. PDF generation (from articles) and PDF visualization (from files in Commons) is an urgent pending task since long ago. Xavier Dengra (MESSAGES) 23:59, 21 January 2022 (UTC)

- Oppose Major browsers (at least on desktop) already have PDF display capabilities. This seems to be asking for a duplication of that functionality which would be a waste of effort. Silver hr (talk) 18:01, 2 February 2022 (UTC)
