From Meta, a Wikimedia project coordination wiki

The ESEAP Conference 2024 which was the bi-annual international conference of Wikimedia Foundation was held in Kota Kinabalu, Sabah, Malaysia on 10–12 May 2024.

Things learned at the conference[edit]

ESEAP Conference was such a great experience for me. From this conference, I have gain a load of knowledge and experience.

  • I had the opportunity to exchange ideas with people from all over the world about how to work on our Wiki project.
  • I studied and improved my fundamental editing and writing skills for the Wikimedia projects.
  • I learned about other wiki friends' journeys with their own work.
  • We are able to introduce our unique Kadazandusun language to the worldwide stage and promote it to people all over the world.

Things the participant contributed or participated in or since the conference[edit]

I've attended a lot of the conference sessions, and these are some of my favorites and most memorable ones.

10 Mei 2024

  • Bridging IPGM Campus Kent's Collaboration Network With the Community through Wikimedia

This was held in timpohon room 15.45 in the afternoon. As members of the Wiki Kent Club, we have been able to communicate the history of the group as well as our journey over the course of the year. Dr. Hamidah binti Samsudin, the director of IPGM Campus Kent, delivered this speech. Among our most popular projects are Wiki Gap, Wiki Kaamatan, and Wiki id Sikul. Our club is expanding, which makes me very happy, and I hope that we will keep getting better in the future.

  • Kent Wiki Club IPGM Campus Kent: Globalizing Kadazandusun Language and Culture via Wikimedia ESEAP

This was held in timpohon room 16.15 in the afternoon. Jurina and Jilorisa led this class, with Dr. James Molijoh providing live interpretation. They spoke in the Kadazandusun language during this session, which added to its beauty and memorability because so many people from around the globe heard them.

  • Mari-Mari Cultural Village Trip

On this first day, we spent the evening visiting the Mari-Mari Cultural Village. Even though I live in Sabah, I have never visited this place before. I now know more about my own culture thanks to this. I have numerous photos of the homes in Kadazandusun belonging to various ethnic groups. We were able to watch the dancing performance as well.

11 Mei 2024

  • Indonesian Vulgarities in Wiktionary

Mahua 1 was the venue for this. I learned that Wiki sites like Wiktionary contain several filthy Indonesian words from this session. Nonetheless, the learner and speaker may view things differently as a result of using coarse language.

  • How to Encourage Women in Mainland China to Actively Participate in the Wikimedia Global Movement

I learned from this workshop that encouraging women to participate in Wikipedia is one of the issues faced by Mainland China. They list numerous explanations and solutions for this. Unlike our Kadazandusun club movement, we faced the issue of promoting male participation. I've gained fresh perspective on how to draw in more young guys to our Wiki Kent Club.

12 Mei 2024

  • What Can (or Should) I Build with This?! Pedagogical Challenges in Teaching Wikidata as a Tool (An Indonesian Experience)

I learned a lot of resources and activities from this session that Wiki Club can do in the classroom. This was helpful information for me as a future teacher so that I could introduce Wikipedia to children and encourage them to use it, especially for our Kadazandusun language.

Plans after the conference[edit]

  • Should participate more in Wiki Kent Club initiatives to promote and internationalize our home tongue.
  • To participate more in Wiki projects, particularly Wiktionary and Wiki Incubator in our native Kadazandusun language.
  • My objective is to make over 2,000 edits to Wiki.

Comments/suggestions about the conference[edit]

I am extremely grateful of the chance to get a scholarship to attend this conference. I have learned a lot and have shared my expertise with other participants. As for recommendations, it would be preferable the next time if attendees could see the entire program outside the room. Apart from that, there are a few technical problems and a disregard for the allotted time. Overall though, I experienced a successful conference event.
